We are very grateful that we have our own museum of Art. The Blanton Museum of Art is located just across from the Bob Bullock Museum, at the heart of the University of Texas at Austin. This is a great place to encourage kids to pay attention to their surroundings, to really look at things and to interact. While you can walk through galleries dedicated to European paintings and sculptures, you can also see much more modern art. There are some interactive exhibitions as well. There are also awesome children’s programs where they are allowed to create art of their own.
Taking children to an art museum may seem like a tough task but it is in fact a lot of fun. Some tips that worked well for us is preparing the kids. Let them know where we are going in advance and have them tell you the proper way to behave at a museum. Encourage “inner voices” and “quiet voices”. Find small tasks for them so that they can interact with the exhibits. Ask them which paintings they find more interesting and why. Above all, sense when it is time to leave.
Just this weekend the Blanton Museum opened a new and seriously cool exhibition. Form into Spirit: Ellsworth Kelly’s Austin is located just outside the Museum on its own building. Its colorful concept and innovative design was created to be a place of joy and contemplation. It is definitely a must see on our upcoming spring break or summer adventures!
